The more severe symptoms of sundowners syndrome are also the most difficult to manage for the fifteen million who care for the nearly six million Alzheimer’s victims. Wandering, especially, is dangerous, besides also being frustrating. Not only can the person with sundowners not control these behaviors, if they wander, they often do not know they are wandering and they often do not know how to return home which results in real threats to their well-being. The treatment of sundowner’s syndrome, just like its cause – dementia – is not well established. But there is hope as the availability of an innovative GPS Tracking Shoe that will become available from Aetrex Worldwide in October.
The $299 walking shoe developed by GTX Corp will allow caregivers to locate those in their charge in an instant on a computer or smartphone through a secure portal. Notification will be sent that the dementia victim has moved from a designated area and display of their location, bearing and speed will allow their recovery before circumstances can impact them.
